This aircraft was built for an attempt at a nonstop flight from Japan to the US. All that fuselage held enough fuel for a range of 5,500 miles. But it never made it into the air. Lockheed built four Explorers, and they were all lost to crashes.
Famed aviator Wiley Post took the wing from a wrecked Explorer and bolted it onto a Lockheed Orion with floats. He had to do it himself since Lockheed refused to have anything to do with it. It was this nose-heavy hybrid that Post and Will Rogers were flying when they crashed and died in Alaska.
Let’s hope your day goes better.

Actually a fairly pleasant morning in Austin. Heat wave broke a little bit, so I’m going to go pound the pedals for a few miles.

Good ol’ Wiley. I’ve been to his airport a few times.
Good morning to you. Time to get to work!

Wiley was a hell of a flyer, but may not been much of an aero engineer.

Nice! 77 and sunny here. Not humid, and a nice breeze.
One of those days where playing hooky looks really attractive.

Wow, it’s only 80 here. Still muggy, though. It will be like this until December. At least that’s what the weather usually does. These days, there’s just no telling what will happen.
